If you’ve picked up a prescription, scheduled an appointment online, or noticed a local shop suddenly get faster at answering your questions, you’ve probably already met AI in Flagstaff, you just didn’t know its name. That’s the idea behind the Festival of Science panel hosted by the Earthsight AI Consortium (EAIC), a Flagstaff-based collaborative of three local AI practitioners working out of the Moonshot Business Accelerator. We’re not here to tell you AI is coming. We’re here to show you it’s already quietly reshaping how this town learns, works, and cares for the land we love—and to talk about where that goes next if we, as a community, do it right.
It started in a classroom. A few years ago, one of our founders taught an introductory AI class at Coconino Community College. A handful of students didn’t want the learning to stop when the class ended, so they kept meeting. That small study group became the Northern Arizona AI (NAAI) Meetup (https://noazai.org), now sponsored by EAIC. NAAI is still a free, open gathering for anyone from total beginners to working professionals who want to use AI in their work and daily lives. People come in nervous about being “left behind” and leave with knowledge that can save them hours per week that they can then spend on the parts of their work that need a human touch.
It’s helping keep resources local. Right now, another one of our founders is working with a Flagstaff startup developing novel, more efficient ways to recycle materials that would otherwise be shipped elsewhere for processing. AI is helping them model efficiency gains and make the case for funding, that unglamorous, essential work of turning a good environmental idea into a fundable one. For a city whose economy depends on the beauty of its surroundings, that’s not a side project. That’s the point.
It’s helping small businesses stay small, on purpose. Across Flagstaff, local shops and service businesses are using AI for the repetitive stuff. AI speeds up scheduling and inventory, and answers the same customer question for the hundredth time so the owners can spend their limited hours on what makes their business worth visiting in the first place. In a tourism-dependent economy trying to build something more stable alongside it, that kind of quiet efficiency matters more than you might think.
None of this happens by accident. EAIC is focused on AI that serves Flagstaff’s actual needs and character, not AI for its own sake. The goal is technology that supports a resilient economy, a healthy environment, and a community that gets to stay exactly as weird and wonderful as it already is.
