A child launches a paper rocket. A parent leans in to help with an experiment. In that moment, an interest in science begins to take shape. These moments may seem small, but they can spark curiosity, build confidence, and create a sense of possibility that lasts far beyond a single day.

For more than a decade, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona (AZ Blue) has supported the Festival of Science, bringing hands-on learning experiences to families, students, and educators across northern Arizona.

This support reflects a simple belief: health is shaped not only by care, but by education, opportunity, and strong communities. By removing barriers to participation, the Festival helps spark curiosity, support learning, and open pathways in science, health, and beyond—creating early opportunities that can shape how young people see their future and what’s possible in their communities.

That commitment continues beyond the Festival. Across northern Arizona, AZ Blue invests in education and workforce development to help inspire the next generation of learners and strengthen pathways into healthcare and other critical fields. That work comes to life through partnerships across the region, including:

  • A partnership with Coconino Community College through AZ Blue Health Choice (AZ Blue’s Medicaid team), more than 400 middle school students participated in STEAM summer camps last year, building early skills and sparking interest in future career pathways.
  • Support for Northern Arizona University’s nursing programs through the AZ Blue Foundation and AZ Blue Health Choice, helping prepare future healthcare professionals to serve rural communities, strengthening the workforce and expanding access to care where it’s needed most.

Together, these efforts reflect something bigger: learning doesn’t just happen in classrooms or labs. It happens in communities and in everyday moments that build a culture of curiosity and lifelong learning.

Across Arizona, that same approach guides AZ Blue’s broader community investment work. Last year, AZ Blue partnered with more than 220 organizations and invested more than $6 million in programs that support families from education and teacher recognition to workforce development for future healthcare professionals.

AZ Blue employees also contributed more than 14,000 volunteer hours across the state, supporting food distribution efforts, assembling heat relief kits, and connecting families to critical resources. These efforts are designed to meet people where they are and address the everyday factors that influence health and well-being.

Because health doesn’t start in a doctor’s office—it starts in the community, in the places where people live, learn, and grow.

The Festival of Science is one example of how those opportunities come to life, helping inspire the next generation of learners and problem-solvers and strengthening communities across Arizona.
