T he Flagstaff Festival of Science has been around for more than thirty years. During that time, it’s become a mainstay in the Northern Arizona community and a leader in national science festivals. Ask anyone new to Flagstaff about the Festival and you’ll hear amazement that a town of around 77,000 has been able to put on such an impressive, 10-day festival featuring a huge array of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) events for so long, and FREE to participants.

Those of us who’ve been around a while know that the Festival happens because the community cares about science literacy for everyone – and happily support it.

Surprisingly, the Festival isn’t affiliated with city or state government, Northern Arizona University, or any of the great science and cultural organizations around the region. Its success is dependent completely on the dedication of volunteers, participants, a tiny staff, and sponsors and donors.

Sponsors, in particular, provide the majority of funding and in-kind donations that make the Festival possible. Without them, there would be no keynote speaker, SciTalks, or Festival in the Park. New programs like Bedtime Stories would never be launched. Can you imagine a September without the opportunity to see an internationally-known speaker, participate in dozens of workshops, or go on adventure hikes that teach you something new about the area? Without our sponsors, this year’s 37 speakers, 54 educators, and 42 schools reaching hundreds kids would lose the In-School programming the Festival provides free of charge.

Remember how you felt when you learned that our community values STEAM so much, it dedicates 10 days to celebrating it?

Our sponsors, made up of individuals and businesses, foundations and government agencies from Comet to Supernova, all recognize the need for what the Festival brings to the community. Northern Arizona and Flagstaff in particular, has a rich scientific history and recognizes the need for STEAM education provided in a fun, accessible way. By contributing to the Festival, sponsors contribute to the vibrancy of our community. They care about their community and for that we are very grateful.
